ABC's "Charlie's Angels" is out tonight

The new version of ABC's "Charlie's Angels" is among tonight's four prime-time premieres, which also include the comedy "Whitney" and crime drama "Prime Suspect" on NBC while James Spader joins the cast of the NBC comedy "The Office."

new ABCs Charlies Angels 2011

"Charlie's Angels" is back on network television because of the enthusiasm for the project from Sony Pictures Television and ABC, according to Leonard Goldberg, an executive producer on both the original version, which ran from 1976-81, and the new one.

The new series will be "more grounded" than the 2000 film "Charlie's Angels" and its 2003 sequel, "Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle," executive producer Alfred Gough said last month during ABC's portion of the Television Critics Association summer press tour.

In addition to the unseen Charlie, the only character name continuing from the original series is Charlie's assistant, John Bosley (Ramon Rodriguez), now considered "the fourth angel."

While ABC looked to its past for a series premiering tonight, NBC looked to England for "Prime Suspect," starring Maria Bello as New York Police Department homicide Detective Jane Timoney, adapting the ITV series of the same name, which starred Helen Mirren.

NBC's other premiere tonight is "Whitney" at 9:30 p.m. Airing at 9 p.m. on NBC is the eighth season premiere of "The Office," with Spader joining the cast.

Spader replaces Steve Carell, who left "The Office" to concentrate on his movie career.

The original "Charlie's Angels" inspired the term "eye candy." Miami hasn't looked as spiffy since cinematography trumped scripts on "Miami Vice." The latest Angels haven't been rescued from mundane assignments like school crossing guard. David Doyle wouldn't recognize the new Bosley (Ramon Rodriguez), who's equal-opportunity scenery for those not turned on by the Angels. Thursday remains a ridiculously packed night of television, assuming you like comedy and crime stories. New Shows:

ABC:

"Charlie's Angels," 8 P.M.

What Is It?: Well, it's "Charlie's Angels," but with new angels, (Annie Ilonzeh; Rachael Taylor. and Minka Kelly), and a new Charlie. Why To Watch: Drew Barrymore is executive producer, and her movie reboots of the franchise were pretty good. (Save for Minka Kelly).

CBS:

Why To Watch: It stars Ben Linus (Michael Emerson) and Jesus (James Caveziel), and is executive produced by J.J. "Lost" Abrams and Jonathan "Dark Knight" Nolan.

Why To Turn the Channel: The only procedural drama you wanted to watch at 9 P.M. on Thursdays was "CSI," and dammit, this show ain't it. Also, is watching people try to prevent crimes different enough from watching people solve crimes to warrant the viewing of yet another crime drama?

NBC:

"Whitney," 9:30 P.M.
"Prime Suspect," 10 P.M.

What Is It?: A remake of the acclaimed UK drama "Prime Suspect," starring Maria Bello in the Helen Mirren role as a tough female detective named Jane.

Also, while the original series focused on single crimes for a season, this one is just your standard one-mystery-per-episode drama.
