About 550,000 Android phones are activated each day, and almost 200 million Android devices are in use worldwide, according to Google. Better functional aesthetics “is something we’ve spent a lot of time on,” said Lockheimer, adding that Google hopes the new OS will change how people feel about their Android devices.
One downside, he said, is that while this phone is the Google-branded experience, other Android phone makers may choose to customize the user interface, because Google doesn’t have complete control over all the hardware and software manufacturing that Apple has. Greengart said Google’s move to unifiy its mobile OS into a single platform is necessary to match Apple.
“A key place where Android badly trails Apple,” he said, “is in apps designed specifically for tablets.”
Unfortunately with the announcement Verizon withheld the release date and price point of the Android ‘Ice Cream Sandwich’ 4.0 powered device for whatever reason leaving many hopeful buyers in the dark.
