Monologue: Melissa McCarthy — I loved Melissa McCarthy on Samantha Who? Funny, creepy and topical commercial about a doll that administers the HPV vaccine. Reminded me of any number of Saturday morning doll commercials … minus the needles.
Inappropriate Office Behavior — Melissa plays a very hands-on office worker. SNL Digital Short: Stomp — A police precinct becomes the setting for a Stomp-like number … until Blue Man Group shows up.
Unfortunately, Pharao’s Chris Rock looked and sounded more like Eddie Murphy.
Musical Guest: Lady Antebellum — Not really my cup of tea, but they looked and sounded pretty good. Focus Group — McCarthy plays Linda, who really loves Hidden Valley Ranch Dressing (except she thinks Bacon Ranch tastes like strawberries).
McCarthy really threw herself into this one … literally. But poor Robert Osborne. TONIGHT'S MUST-SEE: "Saturday Night Live," 11:29 p.m., NBC. Melissa McCarthy spent her 30s being semi-noticed. The music guest is Lady Antebellum, the country group that crossed over to No. 2 on the overall Billboard chart with "Need You Now."
TONIGHT'S ALTERNATIVE: "Bedlam" debut, 10 p.m., BBC America.
Kate works there, as a sales agent, and lives there. » "Love Begins," 7 p.m., and "Love's Everlasting Courage," 9 p.m., Hallmark. These movies provide a sequel to Hallmark's seven-film frontier series. They show the early years of Clark Davis (Warren Brown), a quietly decent guy. » "Harry's Law," 8 p.m., NBC. This reruns the mid-section of the show's three-part season-opener. Jean Smart has great moments tonight as the prosecutor battling Harry (Kathy Bates).
Here's a rerun of last Sunday's documentary. » "Celine Dion: 3 Boys and a New Show," 9 and 10:30 p.m., Oprah Winfrey Network. » "Weird Al Yankovic Live," 9 p.m., Comedy Central. (I’m personally hoping to see MCarthy’s Megan meet Bobby Moynihan’s spot-on imitation of Guy Fieri, as the actress admitted she based the Bridesmaids character off the over-the-top Food Network star.) (Never stop dreaming, PopWatchers!)
But McCarthy won’t be the only one to make her SNL debut tonight. Ladies and gentleman, Wilson Phillips! Will you be tuning in tonight to see how McCarthy fares as a first-time host, PopWatchers? Do you hope the SNL writers pull a lot from Bridesmaids or do you think they should test out something else for McCarthy?
