While much of the two-hour discussion at Dartmouth College focused on the former Godfather's Pizza CEO's "9-9-9" economic plan and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney's 59-point economic plan, Perry told moderator Charlie Rose, the PBS talk show host, that he wasn't ready to present a detailed plan just yet.

During the debate co-sponsored by Bloomberg News, the Washington Post and WBIN-TV, candidates focused most of their fire on Cain, whose recent rise in the polls earned him a center seat alongside Romney, relegating Perry to the second ring with Texas Rep. Ron Paul.

Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann said Cain's plan - which would lower corporate and individual tax rates to 9 percent while imposing a 9 percent national sales tax - would sink the U.S. economy.

Cain aggressively defended his plan and called it "simple, transparent, efficient, fair and (revenue) neutral."

It was the seventh Republican debate of the 2012 campaign season and the fourth to feature Perry. Perry often responded with "um" and "uh" and had trouble matching the polished, detailed answers of Romney or the alternately humorous and combative approach of Cain.

Faced with two frontrunners with specific plans, Perry declined to lay out an economic plan to rescue America from recession and record deficits. The Texas governor gave a few hints: less regulation and more energy exploration.

While other candidates focused their attention on Cain, who has passed Perry in national polls, the Texas governor continued to target Romney.
